How to Change the Speed of a GIF

  1. Choose your GIF. The tool shows how long one loop takes now.
  2. Pick a speed. 2× plays twice as fast. 0.5× plays at half speed.
  3. Choose a direction (optional). Normal, Reverse, or Boomerang.
  4. Click "Change Speed". Preview the new GIF and download it.

How GIF Speed Works

A GIF is a set of frames, and each frame has a delay: how long it stays on screen. Changing the speed changes those delays.

SpeedWhat happensA 2-second GIF becomes
0.25×4 times slower8 seconds
0.5×Half speed4 seconds
0.75×A bit slower2.7 seconds
1.5×A bit faster1.3 seconds
2×Twice as fast1 second
4×4 times faster0.5 seconds

Why Some GIFs Won't Go Faster

Browsers have a speed limit. Frames shorter than 20 milliseconds get slowed down to about 100 ms by most browsers, which makes "super fast" GIFs play slowly.

This tool handles that for you. When a frame would be too short, it merges frames instead. The GIF speeds up properly and plays the same in every browser and app. It's also a little smaller.

Reverse and Boomerang GIFs

  • Reverse plays the animation backward. Fun for water, falling objects and people walking.
  • Boomerang plays forward, then backward, in a smooth loop. It's the same effect as Instagram's Boomerang.

Speed Up GIFs for Smaller Files

A faster GIF with merged frames has fewer frames, so the file usually gets smaller. For more savings, use our GIF compressor or GIF resizer.
