PNG to Icon in Seconds
Converting a PNG to an icon is the fastest way to get a website favicon or a custom Windows icon. The tool makes a real .ico icon file, not just a renamed PNG, so browsers and Windows accept it.
What Is an ICO File?
An ICO file is a special icon format made by Microsoft. One ICO file can hold several versions of the same icon at different sizes. Windows and web browsers pick the best size for each place it appears.
You'll need an ICO file for:
- Website favicons – the tiny icon in browser tabs and bookmarks
- Windows app and shortcut icons
- Desktop folder icons
Which Icon Sizes Should You Choose?
| Size | Where it's used |
|---|---|
| 16 × 16 | Browser tabs, address bar |
| 24 × 24 | Windows taskbar (small) |
| 32 × 32 | Desktop shortcuts, taskbar |
| 48 × 48 | Windows Explorer, larger icons |
| 64 × 64 | High-DPI screens |
| 128 × 128 | Large icons view |
| 256 × 256 | Windows "Extra large" icons |
For a website favicon, 16, 32 and 48 px are enough. For a Windows icon, include 256 px as well. Our default selection covers both.
Tips for a Sharp Icon
- Start with a square image. If yours isn't square, the tool centers it and adds a transparent border. You can also crop it first with our image cropper.
- Use a big source image. 512 × 512 px or larger gives the cleanest results at every size.
- Keep it simple. Tiny icons can't show fine detail. Bold shapes and few colors read best at 16 px.
- Use transparency. A PNG with a clear background looks clean on any tab or desktop color.
How to Add a Favicon to Your Website
- Download your
favicon.icofile from this tool. - Upload it to the root folder of your website (next to
index.html). - Add this line inside the
<head>of your pages:<link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico"> - Clear your browser cache and reload to see it.
Most browsers also look for /favicon.ico by default, so step 3 is a good backup.
Private Icon Maker
Your image stays on your device. The ICO file gets built inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored.
