What Does Inverting Colors Do?
Every color in a digital image is a mix of red, green and blue, each from 0 to 255. Inverting replaces each value with its opposite (255 minus the value).
| Original | Inverted |
|---|---|
| White | Black |
| Black | White |
| Red | Cyan |
| Green | Magenta |
| Blue | Yellow |
The result looks like an old film negative. Transparent areas stay transparent.
Useful Ways to Invert an Image
- Turn a film negative into a photo. Scan or photograph the negative, then invert it. (Color negatives also need some color correction afterward, in our photo editor.)
- Make dark-mode screenshots readable for print, or the other way around.
- Turn black-on-white line art into white-on-black for designs and t-shirts.
- Create striking art effects for posters and social posts.
- Check details in X-rays, scans and diagrams.
Invert vs Black and White
Inverting swaps colors for their opposites. Black and white removes color entirely. You can combine them: convert to black and white first, then invert, for a classic monochrome negative.
Invert Colors on iPhone and Windows
These system settings invert your screen, not the image file:
- iPhone: Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Smart Invert or Classic Invert.
- Windows: Settings > Accessibility > Color filters > Inverted.
To change the actual image, so others see it inverted too, use the tool above.
